Si le XVIIIe siecle français ne dispose, a ma connaissance, d’aucune œuvre romanesque qui fouille a la manière des Splendeurs et misères des courtisanes le système judiciaire de son temps, ou qui se termine par un proces aussi éclatant que celui de Julien Sorel, il y a des liens indéniables, bien connus, entre le roman des Lumières et la loi, que ce soit sur un mode satirique, tels les juges dans Candide ou dans l’Ingénu, ou très sérieux, tels la requete en justice de Suzanne Simonin dans La Religieuse ou le procès qui contribue au châtiment de la marquise de Meneuil dans Les Liaisons dangereuses.
