ABSTRACT
Le mot «roman» a été, pendant plus d’un siècle, l’enjeu de controverses passionnées qui ont porté sur le genre entier du récit de fiction, sur sa valeur littéraire, sur son histoire et son avenir: il s’agit essentiellement du mot, car il est possible que la réalité du genre n’ait jamais été profondément affectée. Le mot «roman», lui, a désigné toutes sortes de récits, tour atour approuvés ou refusés; il a été exalté, méprise, réhabilité; il a référé à des poétiques successives, il a créé toutes sortes de malentendus; il a dessiné, autour d’un ensemble flou de fictions, une frontière mouvante qui visait à le constituer en genre. Ce qui nous intéresse est moins l’exclusive apparente portée contre le mot «roman» au XVIIIe siècle, que son triomphe définitif à la fin du siècle, triomphe qui fait qu’aujourd’hui encore, nous parlons du roman.
