ABSTRACT
Par sa date du publication, 1787, Vathek s’inscrit pratiquement à la charnière de deux siècles et, plus précisément, à l’aube du grand séisme de 1789. Au phénomène de rupture politique et sociale que sera la Révolution française correspond, de manière anticipée, la rupture de caractère esthétique et philosophique de Vathek. Cette œuvre aura le mérite si fragile, si précieux, d’allier la manière du conte philosophique, voltairienne par excellence, aux angoisses existentielles du romantisme. Mince et fragile, certes, mais d’une opacité redoutable, Vathek apparut d’abord comme une énigme. Dès sa parution, l’œuvre est sujette à des controverses qui devaient durer jusqu’à notre époque. Situation peu commune que d’une œuvre écrite directement en français par un auteur anglais.
